Do you wear casual dresses? I never did until this year when they were part of the Outfit Formulas Capsule Wardrobe.
Why? Because I am a different size on top than on bottom and I rarely found a dress that fit right.
But I decided to go on a search and see if I could find something that I liked on me. And sure enough I did.
I found that for my body type, there were three silhouettes that were flattering. A-line, sheath and fit and flare.
Basic fall dresses are so versatile.
You can change the look up with different toppers and shoes. Add some tights and boots. There are all kinds of ways to mix it up.
Here are some of the ways I styled a basic black casual dress and a chambray dress.
Styling a Chambray Dress
Dress (size 16) | Necklace | Earrings | Sneakers (size 8W)
This is the Denim Shift Dress from Talbots. It looks like it’s heavy, but it’s very light. Perfect if your fall weather is still warm.
I kept this styling simple with white sneakers, colorful beaded necklace and earrings.
This is outfit is for when you have a day of errands and want to feel comfortable and relaxed!
Colorful accessories are on trend this fall.
Here is a close up of the necklace and earrings.
Boho Layered Beaded Shell Necklace
Kate Spade Small Square Glitter Huggies
Dress | Necklace | Earrings | Mules (size 8W)
Taking it up a notch by switching out the sneakers for some white mules.
I like the look of mules. But I don’t usually wear them because I feel like my feet are always slipping out of them.
Not with this gorgeous pair of Naturalizer Kayden-Mule Mules. They come up on the side all the way to the heel and cradle your foot so you have the look of the mule, but your feet stays securely in the shoe.
Styling a Casual Black Dress
Dress (Size 3) | Loafers (Size 8W)
This is the Classic Pleated-Sleeve Dress from Chicos. SO COMFORTABLE.
First look is with this Red Easy Spirit Loafer.
This is my one “pop of color” shoe for fall.
Do you wear colorful shoes? There are so many choices these days. I chose red because it goes with many of the items in my closet.
Dress | Denim Jacket | Sneakers (Size 8W)
I added my trusty denim jacket and white sneakers, which would be perfect for this first cool morning we’ve seen in Texas for months! Just take off the jacket when it warms up.
Dress | Corduroy Jacket (similar) | Loafers (Size 8W)
And finally, I went to the back of my closet and pulled out this red corduroy jacket and my black lug sole loafers. I love the red with the black.
If you’ve steered away from dresses in the past, I encourage you to give them a try again. Brands like Chico’s and Talbots seem to know all about how the weight of an over 50 woman is distributed in a totally different way than a 20-year-old. I found that these 2 dresses made room for those areas. No shape wear required!!!!
