How to Make Your Eyelashes Look Longer | Text 4 Ways to Get Longer Looking Lashes | Picture of woman with long brown hair putting on mascara
Fashion & Beauty

How To Make Your Eyelashes Look Longer

“They eyes are the window to the soul”, so they saying goes. And if that’s true, the eyelashes are the adornment that helps draw attention to them. We want our eyelashes to be long and thick. The beauty industry has worked hard to provide ways for us to get what we want! So, if this is what you are looking for, here is How to Make Your Eyelashes Look Longer.

This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through one of these links, I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Why Your Lashes Aren’t Long

Your lashes are like all the other hair on your body. They fall off naturally and regrow over time. It typically takes four to eight weeks to replace an eyelash that has fallen out.

But there are other reasons your eyelashes aren’t as long and thick as you would like for them to be.

The Natural Aging Process

Just like your skin and hair deteriorate over time, so do your lashes. The older you get, the more your lashes fall out. GREAT…..

Your Mascara

Mascaras, especially waterproof mascaras are very drying, making your lashes brittle and weak. This causes breakage. And these types of mascaras can be difficult to remove, causing even more breakage.

False Eyelashes, Extensions and Eyelash Curlers

It turns out that a lot of things that we do to make our lashes look longer and fuller can actually hinder that process. Taking off your false eyelashes incorrectly. Picking at the last few of your eyelash extensions. Using an eyelash curler too aggressively.

Not Taking Care of Your Eyelash Extensions

If you have eyelash extensions, aftercare is a must. A good eyelash extension professional will sell you a natural lash enhancer that will strengthen & condition your lashes. DON’T SKIP THIS STEP!

How to Make Your Eyelashes Look Longer

Lengthening Mascara and an Eyelash Curler

Lengthening mascara contains short synthetic fibers like rayon or nylon that attach themselves to the lashes and extends them. Most lengthening mascaras also having ingredients that volumize and curl your lashes. Curling your lashes after applying the mascara will give a more dramatic effect.

Pros:
  • Least expensive method to enhance the appearance of your lashes, making them look longer and fuller.
Cons:
  • Mascara, especially waterproof mascara, can be extremely drying to your eyelashes.
Tips:
    • Use waterproof mascara sparingly.
    • Remove all your eye makeup, including mascara every night with an eye makeup remover that will dissolve and quickly remove your mascara without tugging at your eyes.  My favorites: Rodan + Fields Essentials Complete Eye Makeup Remover.
    • Use a conditioning primer before applying mascara like Jane Iredale PureLash Extender and Conditioner.

    • Choose a good quality eyelash curler and don’t be too aggressive when using it. Here are some that are highly recommended by makeup professionals: Kevyn Aucoin The Eyelash Curler,  Shiseido Eyelash Curler or Surratt Beauty Relevee Lash Curler.

  • Favorite Lengthening Mascaras: Fringe Benefits. I started using this a few years ago after I had an allergic reaction to every bit of eye makeup I had been using. This lengthens my lashes and is non-irritating to the sensitive skin around my eyes. My Side of 50 Reader Favorites: Benefit They’re Real Lengthening and
Volumizing Mascara, Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara and 3D Fiber Mascara.

Make Your Eyelashes Longer With Lash Serums

Lash Serums, such as Rodan + Fields Lash Boost contain active ingredients that actually make your lashes grow. In the case of Lash Boost, that ingredient is isopropyl cloprostenate. Other serums have bimatoprost that also stimulates lash growth.  Not only do these active ingredients cause your existing lashes to grow, they also stimulate growth in hair follicles not currently growing lashes.

How to Make Your Eyelashes Look Longer | Picture of Rodan + Fields Lash Boost with text "It'll save you the stress of applying falsies every single day." as seen on InStyle.com

Serums without these active ingredients are usually just lash conditioners which might make your lashes look fuller or longer by hydrating and softening them, but they won’t stimulate growth.

I have used Lash Boost for 6 months and even stopped using it for a while because my lashes got too long! This stuff is that good!

Pros:
  • Lash Serums with the correct active ingredients actually cause lashes to grow.
  • Easy to apply – only once in the evening.
  • No need for lengthening mascara.
Cons:
  • Price. Some think the price of $150 is high. However, when compared to the price and time involved in getting eyelash extensions, this is a bargain! A tube of Lash Boost lasts 2-3 months when used nightly. After your lashes grow to the desired length, you can use it every 2 or 3 nights.
  • In some cases, lash serums can cause minor irritation to the eyelid. This can be avoided by only applying to the lash line of the top lid and wiping off any excess that gets on your eyelid.

Tips:

  • Remove makeup and cleanse face before applying lash serums.
  • Apply on the upper lash line only. Wipe off any excess that gets on your lids.
  • Do not apply any other products around the eyes for 90 seconds after applying lash serums.

There’s lots of variety when it comes to false eyelashes. What they are made of. Eyelash strips or individual lashes. How to apply them – glue or magnet. Yes, magnet*.

What False Eyelashes are made of:

  1. Synthetic Materials. Most false eyelashes are made of a flexible, plastic-like material. Pro: Most affordable – as little as $2 a pair.  Con: Heavy and look more obviously fake because they have an extra shiny finish. Begin to degrade after 4 or 5 wearings.
  2. Animal Lashes. Comes from brushed fur that’s been harvested from a variety of animals, including minks and horses. With proper care, you can wear these up to 20 times. Pro: Fine, soft and easy to curl. Con: Loses shape if exposed to water. Price: $25-$50 a set.
  3. Silk. Not actually made of silk. “Silk” lashes are made of a blend of lightweight synthetic materials. Pro: Can get up to 20 wearings with proper care. In terms of price and appearance, put these in the middle between synthetic and animal lashes.

Sizes of False Eyelashes:

  1. Strips. These lashes conform to the length of your eyelids. You can apply short strips to the outer corner of your eyeliners for a “flared” look. Strips adhere to your lids with glue, tape or magnets.
  2. Individual Lashes. These are actually clusters for 5-10 individual lash hairs that have been glued together. A little tricky to apply, but much more natural looking than strips.
  3. Lashify Lashes. Kind of a cross between eyelash extensions and false eyelashes. They are attached at the base of your real lashes instead of on your eyelash. They are the most realistic looking false eyelashes next to professional extensions. But they are pricey – $125 for the starter kit and replacement lashes are $20

*Magnetic lashes have tiny magnets that line the base of the lash strips. You layer one strip on tops of your upper lash line and while holding it in place, layer the second lash strip on top of the first to activate the two strips’ magnetic attraction.

Another type of magnetic lashes has a magnetic powder in the eyeliner to adhere to the magnets on the lashes.

My friend Jodie at Jodie’s Touch of Style has tried both types of magnetic lashes, without much luck. There is definitely a learning curve in getting them on in the first place and then actually having them stay in place. Going the magnetic lash route definitely requires diligence and patience.

Tips:
  • Take off your lashes every night before you go to bed.
  • Clean them. After taking them off, take a Q-tip soaked in makeup remover and gently brush it along the lash strip.
  • You can apply mascara to your false eyelashes, but know that this will shorten their lifespan.

Make Your Lashes Longer With Lash Extensions

Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent lashes that are hand glued to the top of your eyelashes by a technician.  With proper care, they can last 6-8 weeks until they fall out like your natural lashes do.

Pros:
  • They look natural. They don’t look clumpy or feel heavy.
  • You cut way down on your makeup time, because you may not feel the need to apply eye makeup.
Cons:
  • They are high maintenance. You need to clean and brush them daily with a spoolie brush and apply a lash conditioner.
  • You can’t rub your eyes. If you are a person with allergies, this might be hard.
  • If you want to remove your extensions, you’ll have to have it done at the salon. If you try to pull them off yourself, you’ll harm your natural lashes.
  • You can’t sweat, cry, swim or wash your face for 12-24 hours after getting extensions to the glue will dry.
  • Expensive and time consuming. Extensions can run from $100-$400 depending on the experience of your technician. Fill-ins are $50-$165 depending on how many lashes you need. Plus the entire experience can take up to 2 hours.
  • It can be difficult to apply eyeliner.
  • Reactions to extensions such as redness, itching, irritation and swollen eyelids are pretty common.
Tips:
  • Know what you want. There are lots of choices – natural, cat-eye or wispy. What kind of curl? J (straight lash), D (completely curved) or C (between D and J)? This post outlines all the choices you will have when you go to get extensions.
  • Don’t fall for the mink vs. synthetic sales trap. Salons charge premium prices for “mink” lashes, which aren’t necessarily mink. If they are true mink, the lashes will be thin and wispy and you’ll get a “barely there” look, so why bother? You’re best bet is the synthetic lashes.
  • Never tug at your extensions. This damages your natural lashes.
  • Never use and eyelash curler.
  • Don’t used oil-based eye makeup remover.
  • It’s easy to get an eye infection when going to a salon for extensions. To avoid this, make sure your technician washes her hands between clients, wears gloves, uses sanitary pillow covers and sanitizes all utensils.
  • Before you get your extensions, ask where the glue is made. Request glue made in the U.S. even though they may charge more. Glues made in the U. S. are typically made without formaldehyde, which is a major eye irritant.

So, what method will you use to get longer fuller lashes? For my money, I’ll take Lash Boost and good lengthening mascara any day.

Walking Cradles Shoe Review | Oasis Perforated Sneakers

I am so excited to do another Walking Cradles Shoe Review for the Oasis Perforated Sneakers. The Oasis is part of Walking Cradles Metro Collection, a line of sneakers with urban styling. I reviewed the Onyx from this line last fall and I have literally worn this shoe every day since then. I couldn’t wait to try another style from this great collection.

This post is sponsored by Walking Cradles. All opinions are my own. This post also contains affiliate links for your convenience. If you make a purchase through one of these links, I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Walking Cradles Oasis Perforated Sneaker

The Oasis is a leather perforated sneaker. I chose Silver, but it also comes in Almond, Black and Rose Gold.

Here I’m wearing a sweater and jeans which is pretty much what I wear every day. It’s casual and classic. The Oasis gives the outfit a more put together look – much more than my athletic shoes would. And the silver metallic color adds a modern vibe.

It’s amazing what a pair of cute shoes can do for an outfit. But the Oasis doesn’t stop at cute. Oasis has all of the features that make Walking Cradles my favorite brand of shoes for both style and comfort.

  • Removable Tiny Pillows® footbed insoles massage your every step.
  • An antimicrobial sueded fabric sock and lining that are super soft and moisture-wicking, making it optional to wear a sock.
  • The non-compacting cushion bounces back after compression so the cushioning continues wear after wear.
  • The unit bottom is flexible and moves naturally with your foot and it includes built-in tread for slip resistance.
  • Available in many sizes and widths

If you prefer a slip-on sneaker, take a look a the Orleans in Navy, Black, White or Perforated Nubuck AND Black or Sliver Glitter.

Walking Cradles Metro Collection – Your Purchase Helps Others

Walking Cradles has partnered with Soles4Soles a charity that works to “Wear Out Poverty” by providing gently used shoes, job opportunities and more to poverty-stricken women and children around the world.

Walking Cradles will donate $1 for every purchase from their Metro Collection to Soles4Soles.

A dollar per pair donation might not seem like much, but did you know that for each $1 donated, Soles4Souls is able to ship one pair of shoes to anywhere in the world? That means your purchase of any shoe from the Metro Collection equals one pair of shoes to someone in need!

Here’s what Walking Cradles President, Mark Kemp, Jr. says about his time volunteering at a Sole4Soles shoe distribution event in Cabo, Mexico:

“Soles4Souls does more than just put shoes on peoples feet. The events such as those in Cabos, Mexico, bring industry people from all over the USA together united in service and helping. Shoe business people set aside competition for a few days each year and unite in giving back. Over 80 people measured feet, gave away 5,000 pairs of shoes, 3,000 shirts, and 300+ Bibles. There are real needs for basic necessities to be provided, and I am proud to say Walking Cradles has stepped forward and joined New Balance, Fishers of Men, and McCulloch’s Wide Shoes in serving  the mission of Soles4Souls.”

Before blogging, I served in the non-profit sector for 25 years.  I love partnering with and patronizing companies like Walking Cradles who are committed to giving back to help those in need.

Here are some of my other favorites from Walking Cradles. I actually own all of these great shoes and they are now on sale!

Best Skin Hydration Products | My Favorites to Moisturize Dry Skin

It’s COLD outside. That means anytime you spend outside your skin is exposed to brutally cold air and wind. And any time you spend inside your skin is affected by air that is hot and dry.  Resulting in skin that is woefully dehydrated. Even living on the Texas Gulf Coast with all of it’s humidity doesn’t make me immune to dry skin. So here is my list of the Best Skin Hydration Products. These are the ones I use every day.

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. If you make a purchase through one of these links, I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Why You Should Hydrate Your Skin

Right now, your skin is dehydrated. No matter how much water you drink.  So you need to use products that will hydrate your skin and keep it hydrated.

Why? Because well-hydrated skin is more resilient. Hydrated skin will remain flexible and allow your protective lipid barrier to remain intact while keeping moisture in. Hydrated skin is better protected from environmental factors, UV radiation, germs and irritants!

And it starts with what you use when you shower. “They” say to avoid hot showers, so I’ll say it too. But do as I say, not as I do. I LOVE a super-hot shower! Especially when it’s cold outside. But what I use when I shower is this doTerra Moisturizing Body Bar. I used to use Caress Body Bars and Body Wash. Super creamy, but I don’t really know what they did to hydrate my skin, even though I liked it.

Then my sister gave me one of these doTerra Moisturizing Body Bars for Christmas one year, which I thought was weird because in the package she also included some of their hand soap and toothpaste. Was she trying to tell me something? And then I used it. This Doterra Bar is not like anything I have ever used before.

It looks like soap, but it doesn’t feel like soap.  There are no harsh surfactants in it. It’s infused with Jojoba seed oil, vegetable derived glycerin and aloe vera juice. It just leaves your skin feeling clean and moisturized.

Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Body Replenish*

This is an ultra-hydrating body moisturizer that I put on damp skin right out of the shower.  It has hyaluronic acid which holds up to 1,000 times it’s weight in water and helps PREVENT future moisture loss. It’s light, creamy, non-greasy and absorbs quickly. Which is something I want when I’m trying to get dressed and out the door in the morning.

Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Serum*

I have been using this serum for a year and my skin loves it. If I was down to my last dime and had to decide between this serum and paying the mortgage, I would seriously get this serum! Active Hydration Serum is an oil-free serum that raises the level of your skin’s hydration 200% on the first application and protects your skin from losing moisture for 8 hours.

You use it AFTER cleansing and toning and BEFORE you apply your moisturizer. Active Hydration Serum balances your skin’s moisture levels and prepares it to better receive any products you layer on after it, boosting their performance. Seriously – you have to try this!

Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Bright Eye Complex*

This gel eye cream is for the thin, fragile skin around your eyes, often the first place to show signs of stress and fatigue. Over time, it improves the appearance of dark circle and under eye puffiness.

Rodan + Fields Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid Broad Spectrum SPF 30*

This is a new product I have added to my hydration arsenal. Radiant Defense is considered a Dermacosmetic because it is formulated with anti-oxidants and protects against environmental aggressors. It also helps protect your skin’s moisture barrier. I wear it even on my non-makeup days, just because it feels so good on my face. And after all that hydrating, I want to continue to protect that moisture barrier.

Radiant Defense is very lightweight. I use it in place of foundation. The coverage is buildable so you can have as little or as much coverage as you want.

If you want a sample of Radiant Defense, tell me in the comments and I’ll send you one! It comes in six shades.

Hydration for Your Hands and Feet

I put on hand lotion several times a day, but I still find that my cuticles get dry and start looking bad. When I went from my acrylics back to natural nails (read about that here), I started using this double whammy:

Deborah Lippmann It’s A Miracle Cuticle Oil followed by Juara Coconut Illipe Hand & Nail Balm.

First I apply the cuticle oil and rub it into my cuticles. I follow it up with the Juara, rubbing it into my cuticles first and then rub the excess into my hands. The oil penetrates the nail bed, keeping my nails healthy and the Juara hydrates, plumps, brightens and conditions my cuticles.  The Juara is very thick. Not like a traditional hand lotion or cream, so I don’t keep it by the sink to use after washing my hands. I try to do this process in the evening before bed.

I hate the way my heels and feet get all dry and cracked looking between pedicures, so I started using Sol de Janeiro Samba Foot Fetish Cream. It comes with a board to smooth and exfoliate the dry skin on your feet. Then you rub the cream into them. It absorbs quickly and if I am consistent, my feet stay looking great all the time.

Women’s Winter Coats On Sale | Beautiful Coats for Women 50+

It’s the middle of winter and it’s COLD outside. Not only is it COAT season, but it’s also the best time to buy Women’s Winter Coats on Sale. So I’ve put together this post featuring my favorite fashion bloggers wearing all types of winter coats. Take a look. Get inspired. Shop the sales to get the best buys on winter coats!

Rain Coats and the Classic Trench Coats

Here in Texas, we do have some days that require a heavy coat.  But more often than not, it seems like we need a raincoat in winter. Something to keep us both warm and dry.

Beth from Style At A Certain Age is kicking up her heels in this bright and cheery raincoat from Talbots.  The hood on the back means you might not need to take your umbrella. And it’s light weight makes it the perfect raincoat to wear year round.

Alie from Wardrobe Oxygen is wearing a Classic Trench from Universal Standard, which is another option for weather that is rainy and cold. Many trench coats feature a zip out lining, which make them great for year-round wear.

Leopard Coats

Leopard is everywhere! Check out these coats!

Isn’t this shot of Meri from @pro.age.style just stunning?  She wears her leopard coat with skinny black pants and  boots topped off with a goldenrod beret. So European!

Did you know that leopard is a neutral? Reagan from Nifty 50 Fabulous is wearing a black/gray/white leopard print with a red sweater and plaid scarf. Pattern mixing at it’s best!

Coats That Show Your Personality

Misja is a 50+ Dutch fashion photographer and blogger. The details on this coat are so unique! One of the sleeve is quilted. The neutral geometric design goes with everything. And her floral headband just makes the whole look!

Teddy Bear Coats

Ever wonder why coats like this are called Teddy Bear Coats? It’s because the fabric looks the same as the kind they used to make old-fashioned teddy bears out of.  In her post on Elegantly Dressed and Stylish, Jess pairs this gorgeous rust colored teddy bear coat with leopard and different shades of brown. This look has so much visual interest with the variety of textures, solids and patterns.

The Car Coat

I have not heard or used the term “car coat” for years, but that’s what I immediately thought when I saw Suzanne in this pretty plaid coat in her post on Crazy Blonde Life.  Back in the 20’s when cars were becoming more mainstream, driving was considered an outdoor sport. So if you were in a car, you wore your “car coat” to keep you warm and keep the dust off your clothes. Back then, the car coat was usually longer. Today they are shorter – like this one that sits right at the hip. Did you notice the fur hood?

Puffer Coats

Puffer Coats like this one that Jodie from Jodie’s Touch of Style is wearing are quilted coats that are filled with down insulation or synthetic fibers for maximum warmth. The old style of puffer coat tended to look really bulky. Really, it’s only function was warmth. But this one is sleek and stylish. The belt shows off Jodie’s waist and the different types and directions of the quilting make a very flattering silhouette.

13 Super Stylish Ways to Wear A Scarf

Scarves. My first memory of a woman wearing a scarf was of my mom wearing one on her head to keep her hair from getting messed up on a windy day. Do you remember those days back in the 60’s? When I was in college in the 70’s scarves were all the rage. I remember wearing them tied in a knot around my neck. I don’t remember us tying them many other ways. But today, there is no end of ways to use scarves as an accessory – a beautiful way to add color and style to any outfit. And here is how some of my favorite fashion bloggers are styling their scarves. 13 Super Stylish Ways to Wear A Scarf.

Get my 3 Fashionable Ways To Tie A Scarf Here!

Scarves come in all shapes and sizes these days. The long scarf, blanket scarf, short scarf, infinity scarf.  There are beautiful scarves just for looks and their are scarves that keep you warm. Silk scarves, cotton scarves, fleece, wool and chunky knitted scarves. And they come in a variety of price points from  $10.99 to up to hundreds of dollars for a designer scarf.

You can tie a scarf around your neck, drape it around your shoulders, tie it on your purse or wear it as a vest. Talk about a versatile wardrobe item! Do you have a favorite way to wear a scarf?

How to Wear a Long Scarf

Long scarves are fun because there is enough fabric there to tie it into all kinds of intricate designs if you are so inclined. But these days, I’m seeing more and more women wear long scarves in a lose and casual way.

Nancy from Jodie’s Touch of Style rolls hers loosely around her neck and then lets it hang. That roll provided a little texture to her outfit.

Pam from Over 50 Feeling 40 does a similar roll but adds an extra loop in there. Don’t you love the dramatic color of Pam’s scarf? A necklace with her top would have been great, but that scarf adds a certain flair and totally changes the look of her outfit.

Alie from Wardrobe Oxygen also did a simple wrap and drape to her animal print scarf. I love how she paired her animal print scarf with her plaid blazer. Scarves are a great way to ”ease into” pattern mixing.

Charlotte from Jodie’s Touch of Style used a scarf clip to style her scarf.

Julia from When the Girls Rule just tied hers into a simple square knot.

Leaving the scarf long like the ladies did in both of these pictures draws your eye up and down creating the illusion of length. And there are lots of choices of pretty scarf clips!

How to Wear A Short Scarf

Jodie ties her short scarf in a knot at her neck. I love how she chose a contrasting color to go with her sassy off the shoulder top!

Darlene from Aquamarina Style ties her short scarf like a bandana and wears it two ways.
Top picture: Knot in the front and tail down the back.

Bottom picture: Knot to one side, tail to to the other side.

Super casual, yet adds that finishing touch to a plain tee.

How to Wear A Wrap Scarf

Wrap scarves also come in lots of sizes. This large one that Darlene is wearing has a design that is made for wearing as a wrap – can you see it? Darlene just draped it around her shoulders and belted it. Such a great look.

Julia wears her pretty fall floral scarf as a simple wrap. The pattern adds interest to her basic black or navy dress.

How to Wear a Blanket Scarf

Beautiful Carrie from Curly Crafty Mom is not in the group of women we would call “midlife”. But I couldn’t resist showing you her gorgeous plaid blanket scarf styled over her maxi dress. You can wrap a blanket scarf in a lot of different ways. Carrie styled it with the tail pointing down the front.

Other Fun Ways to Style A Scarf

Allie wears her scarf as a belt in the super sophisticated look.

Julia ties her scarf to the handle of her purse.

The possibilities are endless. Put some of the basic pieces in your wardrobe together, mix in a few scarves and you have multiplied the number of looks in your wardrobe.

I hope this post gave you some great ideas on ways to style your scarves. Need more?

Stylish Necklace Readers by Neckglasses | Beautiful Necklace Glasses and Pendant Readers

Today I want to introduce you to some Stylish Necklace Readers by Neckglasses. But first a little history. A sad little tale that we can all relate to.

This post is sponsored by Neckglasses. All words and opinions are my own.

It’s one of the first signs of fleeting youth that we face as midlife women. The need for reading glasses. We need just a little help from our “readers” or “cheaters” to read something…a menu, price tag or message on our phone. Needing those readers is a bit of a nuisance, but we deal with it.

We buy a pair. Then we can never find that pair when we need them, so we buy the 10-pack from Costco and put a pair in every room in the house.

When we’re out, we are forever rummaging through our purses to find our cheaters because it seems we need them more and more. And it’s just like so many things that come up as we age. It’s just a big old pain in the butt!

Of course, we could resort to our mother’s and grandmother’s solution of wearing our glasses around our neck with a chain. Seriously – I did buy one of those chains just to wear at home and my kids about died.

What’s a girl who isn’t ready to look in the mirror and see her grandmother to do? Would you believe I’ve found a solution? One that is both stylish and functional? And actually allows you to see? Introducing the Stylish Necklace Readers by Neckglasses.

Take a look at my Necklace Readers – Catherine by Neckglasses

Yes, that beautiful necklace that is reminiscent of the Kendra Scott jewelry I love is actually my reading glasses. There is nothing “granny” about that!

It’s called “Catherine”  and is sleek and feminine. I was in a wine bar with friends and all I had to do to read the menu is lift up my necklace and Voila! I could READ!

Catherine comes in both silver and gold.

Another style that I like is Dianna, which is designed like a glass locket. Neckglasses has a pair to compliment every style.

Pendant Readers for Men

Neckglasses even has styles for men…because women aren’t the only ones who can’t find their readers. No more putting glasses in their pockets where they can get scratched or in their wife’s purse to carry. (I’m talking to one guy in particular here!) “Lee” offers the same ease-of-use solution for always having your readers handy.

Neckglasses. The fashionable and functional solution to having your reading glasses handy. Check out their many styles here.

How To Restore Damaged Nails After Gel, Acrylic or Powder Manicures

Perfectly manicured nails. Who doesn’t love the look of the perfect length, shape and color you can get by going to the nail salon every two weeks and “getting your nails done”  with acrylics, a gel or powders? But what happens when you try to go back to your natural nails? All of these methods damage your nails in some way, leaving them dry, brittle, thin and splitting. That’s why so many women go back to the artificial nails. It seems like if you don’t, you’ll never have “nice” nails again.  But there is hope and I have found a way. Here’s how to restore damaged nails after gel, acrylic or powder manicures.

Why I Wanted to Restore My Nails After Gel Manicures

I love the perfectly shaped nails that didn’t chip, cuticles with no hangnails and long lasting color that I got from my artificial nails. Over the last 15 years, I’ve tried them all – acrylics, gel and powder.

At first, getting my nails done every two weeks was a luxury.  When I started these regular appointments in my 40’s, I had just been promoted to a management position at the nonprofit where I was working. I was making a little money. My boss got her nails done. After years as a stay at home mom with no extra money in the budget for such a luxury, I was ready to treat myself. And for a while, it was great. Until it wasn’t.

At some point, I got tired of sitting in the manicurist’s chair for an hour every two weeks. And I had other things I wanted to spend my money on. So I decided to go back to my natural nails. Except they weren’t the nails that I used to have. They were thin, dry, splitting and brittle. And after a few weeks of looking like that, I just couldn’t stand it anymore, so headed back to the salon to get the artificial ones again. I continued this cycle for 15 years.

A few months ago, I decided once again to try and go “natural”, but before doing so, I asked ladies in my Facebook group who had done this HOW they achieved healthy natural nails again. They encouraged me that it could be done. I also did some research online and came up with this plan that restored my nails to their strong and healthy original state in 8 weeks.

What I Did to Restore My Nails After Gel Manicures

I had the gels removed at the salon, had my nails trimmed short and got a regular manicure.  Here’s how my nails looked on that day.  You can see they are thin, ridged and uneven.

How To Restore Damaged Nails After Gel, Acrylic or Powder Manicures | Picture of two hands on white pillow after powder manicure removed

My restore my nails regimen started with applying one coat of nail strengthener daily. I did this for seven days. On the seventh day I removed the nail strengthener and started again.

After the nail strengthener dried, I applied cuticle oil  to my nails and skin around them twice a day. I followed this with a heavy moisturizing hand and nail cream. Why use both an oil and a cream? The oil absorbs into the nail bed better and the cream creates a barrier so that the moisture doesn’t escape.

I left my cuticles alone. I didn’t trim or pick at them because the cuticles are there to protect the new nail growth that is occurring underneath.

If I needed to file my nails for any reason I used a glass nail file. Why? Because a glass nail file smooths and seals the freshly filed edges, reduces the nails susceptibility to splits and breakages.  It does this by sealing the keratin layers at the edge of the nail together, preventing peeling and chipping. A glass nail file is inexpensive and the best investment you can make in restoring your fragile nails.

Other reasons to invest in a glass nail file?

  • They do not dull over time.
  • They are more efficient than emery boards of steel nail files because they file and smooth the nails in one quick motion.
  • They can be washed in hot, soapy water and even sterilized making them more hygenic.
  • Glass nail files will not wear down, corrode or rot.

I went for a manicure every 3 weeks. At that time, I did allow my manicurist to trim my cuticles, but only then. I also had her apply nail strengthen rather than traditional nail polish.

I took a Biotin supplement every day.

Here is how my nails looked at my first manicure, four weeks after removing my gels. Still weak, but looking better.

I followed my regimen RELIGIOULSY and after 8 weeks, here is what my nails look like.

I am so pleased with the results! I’m sure I’ll be sporting my natural nails from now on! Yes, you CAN have healthy, natural nails after gel, acrylic or powder manicures!

Summer to Fall Outfits | Summer to Fall Transition Looks

I live in Texas where we won’t see even a HINT of cool weather until late October. So while those of you who live north of us are enjoying your pumpkin spice lattes and wearing your cute new sweaters and boots, we’re still in shorts, flip flops and running my AC 24/7. So what do those of us who live down south wear when we want an outfit that says FALL but it’s too hot to wear cold weather clothing? Turns out there are lots of options with the currently trending  denim, animal prints and fall florals. Take a look at some of the Summer to Fall Outfits my favorite fashion bloggers put together!

Summer to Fall Outfits – Denim

Claudia from Empty Nest Style added a chambray shirt to her white jeans and tied it all together with a cognac cardigan, bag & shoes. Those accessories just say fall to me and I am loving how the whole “no white after Labor Day” rule has gone by the wayside.

Summer to Fall Outfits – Florals

We saw lots of florals this summer, many of which can go right into fall.

In my look, I shopped my closet and put together this look. I paired the LOFT floral tee that I wore all summer with my Wit & Wisdom Thyme Cropped Pants. I topped it with a denim jacket, which seems to be the most versatile third piece for any season. Tied it all together with olive booties and burgundy color purse.

This particular denim jacket is from Talbots and I love it so much. It has a bit of a shape, which is more flattering on me than those that are boxy. And it has some stretch, which makes it easy to move around in. I also have it in white!

I received my first pair of Wit & Wisdom Ab-solution pants in my Trunk Club shipment this summer and immediately loved the fit, stretch and tummy control.

My booties are from Walking Cradles, a great line of shoes that are comfortable and stylish. You can get 20% off and free shipping at walkingcradles.com with the code MySide20.

Fonda from Savvy Southern Chic is wearing a floral camisole, crop flare jeans and blush colored cardigan. The cardigan is lightweight and a great piece when the weather is hot, but the AC in stores and restaurants is cranked up high.  Notice her beautiful Kendra Scott necklace! I purchased this same one for my daughter’s birthday at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It is gorgeous and very versatile. Follow Fonda on Instagram.

For a different kind of floral top, Suzy from Empty Nest Blessed is wearing a navy top with floral embroidery with blush jeans and camel booties. I am seeing lots of blush as a neutral this fall. And booties are a great way to add some fall to your wardrobe without heating things up! Follow Suzy on Instagram.

Summer to Fall Outfits – Animal Print

Jess from Elegantly Dressed & Stylish wears a ¾ length blouse with jeans and accessorizes it with an animal print clutch and scarf. Jess incorporates another fall trend by wearing a blouse in a menswear inspired print. And the pattern mixing she does here is so interesting a looks great. Follow Jess on Instagram.

Regan from Nifty 50 and Fabulous and Suzanne from Crazy Blonde Life both had the same idea for early fall in the south! Black tops and pants with animal print accessories.

Regan wears her animal print scarf as a wrap and Suzanne adds a leopard print clutch and booties! So cute! Follow Regan on Instagram.

Suzanne carries on the theme here with a semi-sheer animal print blouse and black distressed jeans. Belts are all the rage this fall and hers adds an extra touch of zing to a very classy fall outfit. Follow Suzanne on Instagram.

What about you? Is it warm where you live? What are you wearing for the summer to fall transition?
