Women’s Fashion Sneakers | The Walking Cradles Metro Collection

What shoes do you wear on a day when you know you are going to be on your feet a lot? You’re shopping. Or running errands. Or chasing grandkids. Or traveling. Your athletic shoes are probably the most comfortable shoes you own, but they look pretty clunky.  When you wear them, you don’t exactly feel like your look is “polished”? Do you sacrifice comfort to look good? That would be a big no for me. But fortunately you don’t have to choose comfort over fashion. Introducing Walking Cradles’  line of Women’s Fashion Sneakers called the Metro Collection.

This post is sponsored by Walking Cradles. All opinions are my own. This post also contains affiliate links for your convenience. If you make a purchase through one of these links, I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Women’s Fashion Sneakers 2018

Take a look at the Onyx – a casual sneaker with urban styling! Don’t you just love it?  I love the details on this slip-on sneaker. Check out the detailing: mesh and nubuck uppers that include goring and elasticized lacing.

And they are so comfortable!!!! Walking Cradles has thought of everything:

  • Removable Tiny Pillows® footbed insoles massage your every step.
  • An antimicrobial sueded fabric sock and lining that are super soft and moisture-wicking, making it optional to wear a sock.
  • The non-compacting cushion bounces back after compression so the cushioning continues wear after wear.
  • The unit bottom is flexible and moves naturally with your foot and it includes built-in tread for slip resistance.

But the Onyx is only fashion sneaker in the fabulous Metro Collection!

Check out Orleans that comes in a snake print and lots of fabulous fall colors!

Walking Cradles has partnered with Soles4Soles a charity that works to “Wear Out Poverty” by providing gently used shoes, job opportunities and more to poverty-stricken women and children around the world.

Walking Cradles will donate $1 for every purchase from their Metro Collection to Soles4Soles.

A dollar per pair donation might not seem like much, but did you know that for each $1 donated, Soles4Souls is able to ship one pair of shoes to anywhere in the world? That means your purchase of any shoe from the Metro Collection equals one pair of shoes to someone in need!

Before I started blogging, I worked in the nonprofit sector for 25 years. Partnerships with companies like Walking Cradles can make such a difference in the great work these organizations do. And as a consumer, I love to patronize companies that are looking past their own bottom line and contributing to the greater good. Just another reason I love Walking Cradles.

Bra Fitting Guide | What To Look For In A Professional Bra Fitting

Have you ever had a professional bra fitting? When I did an informal poll of the My Side of 50 readers, it was split about 50/50. Half said they had been professionally fitted and the other half said they had not. I have to admit, it’s probably only been in the last several years that I’ve started to get professionally fitted and I can’t tell you what a difference it makes! When I was buying bras on my own, I had the size and fit all wrong!  I was recently invited by Soma Intimates to get a professional bra fitting at their store at The Woodlands Mall in Texas.  Here is my Bra Fitting Guide with things you should look for when getting a professional fitting.

This post is sponsored by Soma Intimates. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through one of my links, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Bra Fitting Guide | More Than Just the Measurement

When getting fitted for a bra, most of us know to measure around our rib cage under our breasts where the bra hooks. And then to measure around the fullest part of our breasts. There are all kinds of calculators online that will help you determine “your size” from these two measurements.  But did you know that the SHAPE of your breasts also determines the size and type of bra you should wear? That’s why getting a professional bra fitting can be such an asset in getting the most comfortable and flattering bra.

Getting the correct measurements is only the first step. At a professional bra fitting, the specialist should also:

  • Ask what type of bras you are looking for. Strapless, racer back, underwire, t-shirt?
  • What do you not like about your current bra?
  • Examine how the bra looks on you. Does the gore (the part between the cups) lay flat against your chest? Do the cups cover your breasts or do they spill out on the side? Do the straps dig into your shoulders?
  • After looking at the bra, the specialist should ask you to put on a shirt to see how it looks under clothes.

My Complimentary Professional Bra Fitting at Soma Intimates

Maranda was the trained bra fit specialist who worked with me at Soma Intimates. She did everything she was supposed to do.  She asked me what type of bra I was looking for, measured me, listened to my concerns, brought me options and adjusted where needed.

The first step was getting measured. I know that for some women, modesty is an issue and they may be uncomfortable being measured by someone else for a bra. In the privacy of the dressing room, Maranda gave me the option of being measured with or without my shirt on.

Then she asked me about what type of bra I was looking for. What my concerns were. About my lifestyle and the types of clothes I wear. I answered those questions for me, but also for all of you. Because prior to my fitting, I asked YOU what YOU hated about your bras! Here are the answers and the solutions Maranda had from the Soma Intimates line:

Bra Fitting Guide | My Straps Dig Into My Shoulders

Stunning Support Full Coverage Bra– This underwire bra has wide set padded straps that make the fit very comfortable through the shoulders. I tried this on and was amazed at the difference a little padding in the straps makes!

Bra Fitting Guide | I Hate UNDERWIRE

I wear a 36DD and always wear underwire bras, which I don’t find to be very comfortable. I really didn’t think I had another option.  But I did! The Enbliss Wireless Bra! Full coverage, super soft fabric and no wires.

I couldn’t believe the support I received from this wireless bra.  And when I put my shirt on over it, I looked like I lost 10 lbs! In the Enbliss Wireless Bra, I am every bit as lifted and supported as I am in my underwires!

Bra Fitting Guide | My Bra is So Uncomfortable I Take It Off the Minute I Get Home

That’s me. And since I work at home, I usually don’t wear a bra. Which is no big deal unless company or the UPS guy shows up unexpectedly!  Enter the Enbliss Wireless Bralette. It’s kind of like a sports bra, but it is not as binding. Super soft and comfortable. Although at a 36DD it did not provide the support I would need to wear it out in public, it is the perfect around the house or sleep bra for me.  And it does provide enough coverage so that I am appropriately attired if someone stops by the house unexpectedly!

Bra Fitting Guide | Bras That Irritate Post Surgery

One of my readers shared that post-radiation, she found her bras to be very irritating to her sensitive skin. Soma has a whole line of post-surgical bras including those with pockets for those women wear prosthetics after a mastectomy.  These bras are soft, comfortable and pretty!

Bra Fitting Guide | It’s Hard to Find Bras for Larger Sizes

The Solution is Soma Intimates Curvy Couture line with beautiful supportive bras that go up to cup size HH.

Bra Fitting Guide | BACK FAT That Shows Through My Shirt!

You have to try the marvelous Vanishing Back Bra. You can read my review and see my results here!

My Soma Purchases | Bras and More

The two best bras for me were the Enbliss Wireless Bra and Enbliss Wireless Bralette.

And much to my surprise I also purchased SHAPEWEAR! The Vanishing Edge High Waisted Brief. This beautiful panty is so light and is the most comfortable shapewear I have ever put on.

I also stocked up on Soma’s Cool Night’s Short Sleeved Sleep Shirts.  I have worn these for years! They are so light and comfortable to sleep in and when the night sweats hit, they DO keep you cool. They wash beautifully and keep their color and shape for a long time. They also have pajamas in this line that comes in the same fabric.

Has it been a year since you had a professional bra fitting? Or have you never had one at all? Stop by your local Soma Intimates and get one. You will be so happy with the results!

Fall Fashion for Women Over 50 | Ethyl Clothing

Fashion for Women Over 50. Do you ever wonder if there IS such a thing? I know there is, but it can be hard to find with so many retailers showing their clothes on 14-year-old waifs who don’t weigh 100 lbs. soaking wet. That’s why I’m super excited to show you this outfit by Ethyl Clothing, a brand of clothing for real women with real bodies.

This post is sponsored by Ethyl Clothing. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through one of my links, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Even though we are seeing 90-degree temperatures every day in Texas, most of us are finished buying summer clothes and are looking forward to shopping for some fall/winter outfits.

So I chose this Aviana-Petunia Sweater and Carly-Poivron pull-on jean to feature. This sweater and jean combination fits my lifestyle perfectly. I would wear this outfit just about anywhere – out to lunch, to go shopping, to a football game or for date night when it’s cold outside.

This Aviana-Petunia sweater is so luxurious. Super-soft and heavy enough to wear on the coldest days.

Fashion for Women Over 50 | Boatneck detail of white sweater by Ethyl Clothing

The boatneck is so flattering and has a beautiful “feathery” detail that is mimicked in the hem.  The knit is so pretty all by itself that I didn’t accessorize the look with anything but my simple gold earrings.

I love the pull-on ease of the Carly-Poivron jeans. They are stretchy and comfortable.  They are medium weight jeans can be worn year-round. And even though they are pull-on,  they have front and back pockets!!! Just like your zip-up fly jeans. The denim is so soft and the fit is incredible.

I was introduced to Ethyl Clothing through my friend Jodie and Jodie’s Touch of Style. You can see the pieces that she styled here.  And although Ethyl Clothing is a new brand to me,  they have been around for over 30 years.

Their commitment to quality fabric and superior fit in all their pieces make them the perfect choice for women over 50 to find stylish clothing that they can wear for years. Ethyl’s missy-fit line is vanity sized meaning that you order a size down from your regular size. I ordered one size down on both pieces and they fit perfectly.

Shopping online with Ethyl Clothing is virtually risk-free. They offer free shipping on orders over $99 and provide a pre-paid postage return label so that you can send back any items that don’t work for you.

Cute and Comfortable Shoes for Travel | A Review of Lucy By Kuru

I am so excited to be partnering with Kuru Footwear this week to introduce you to the Lucy. We are preparing for our vacation to Maine next week, which means I need some cute and comfortable shoes for travel!

This post was sponsored by Kuru Footwear. All opinions are my own.

Yes, you read that right! I want cute AND comfortable. Lucy meets the criteria on both counts.

Aren’t these so cute? And Lucy comes in three colors. I chose the Dusk Blue and I think it looks great with shorts. I usually wear and 8WW but just a regular 8 in this shoe fits great.

Here’s what makes Lucy so comfortable:

  • The KuruSole which hugs your feet and keeps the shoe in place – no sliding up and down on the heel!
  • EVA midsole to provide cushioning and shock absorption – just like a lot of sneakers have.
  • Breathable mesh toe box that keeps your feet cool all day.
  • Slip-on style – easy on and off which is great for going through the TSA screening. Or just when you need to slip on some shoes to run out to the mailbox.

I’ve already put these to the test with a day of shopping and they passed with flying colors. They fit perfectly right out of the box. No need to “break them in”.

I was introduced to Kuru Footwear last year when I needed some shoes to wear around the house to get some relief from plantar fasciitis. One of the great things about Kuru’s website is that you can shop both men and women’s shoes by your particular need. Here are a few categories:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Heal Pain
  • Arch Support
  • Broad Toebox
  • Walking
  • Standing
  • Nursing/Healthcare
  • Slip Resistant

In the past,  if I had seen a list like this and not known about Kuru Footwear, I would have assumed that these were “clunky, old people’s shoes”. Not anything stylish that I would wear!  Not so! Kuru Footwear has so many great styles to choose from. I am loving their Letti & Suomi Sandals!

Kuru Footwear is an online retailer. Does online shopping make you a little hesitant? Well, online shopping with Kuru Footwear is virtually risk-free.  Kuru offers free shipping on all domestic orders AND returns! Their exchange and return policy is absolutely NO HASSLE!

Give Kuru Footwear a try! It’s the best investment on a pair of shoes I’ve ever made!

Best Sunless Tanners

Do you use sunless tanners? When shorts weather arrives, I want to add some color to my winter white legs, so I have used sunless tanners for years!

Sunless Tanners have certainly changed since they first came out. The days of an off-putting odor and orange streaks are over.

You can get tanners that slowly build up color over a week, a few days or even a couple of hours. Some even give you color immediately.

Many proclaim skin benefits, like moisturizing, vitamins and anti-oxidants.

What they DON’T promise is sun protection. Sunless Tanners can give you a little color and a sun-kissed glow, but they do not have any of the ingredients that protect you from the sun. So even if you wear sunless tanner, you need to wear sunscreen every day.

Here is my review of 3 sunless tanners that I have tried this season. This is not a sponsored post. But the links are affiliate links, which means if you make a purchase through one of my links, I will receive a small commission at no expense to you.

Jergen’s Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer

Price $7.99-$10.00

I have used Jergen’s sunless tanners for years and they just get better all the time. You’ll notice that Jergen’s bills this as a moisturizer. It’s a moisturizing lotion that just so happens to have sunless tanning ingredients in it.

It promises a natural tan that builds up slowly over a week. They suggest that you use daily until you get the color you want. The color will begin to fade a few days after you stop using it.

I used the Fair to Medium and I noticed a bit of color within 3 days.  I had the color I wanted within a week.  The color definitely began to fade when I stopped using it for 2 days in a row.

Pros:

  • The price and the fact that I can pick it up at the grocery store.
  • Great moisturizer
  • Natural looking tan
  • Comes in Fair to Medium or Medium to Dark so that you get a tan that more closely matches your natural skin tone

Cons:

  • Takes longer to dry because it is an actual moisturizing lotion, so you don’t want to use it at a time when you are in a hurry to get dressed and out the door.

Rodan and Fields Essentials Foaming Sunless Tan

Price: $26

This product provided a natural-looking tan as promised, with the color starting to develop within 2-4 hours. Now, you aren’t going to get a full-blown dark tan in that amount of time, but you will definitely see some color.

This sunless tanner is a foam, rather than a lotion. You spray one or two pumps in the palm of your hand, then spread it over the parts of your body where you want a tan.

The foam turns into a thin liquid as you spread it on and it dries very quickly. This is a big plus if you want to apply your sunless tanner and get dressed and out of the house quickly. There is minimal “drying time” before you can put on your clothes.

I found the color to be very natural and lasted about just as long as the Jergens. Fading started on day 3 after I stopped using it.

Pros:

  • Foam to thin liquid provides even coverage easily
  • Dries quickly
  • Natural color

Cons:

  • I think it’s a little pricey. There are some skincare products I’m willing to spend the money on. Sunless Tanner just doesn’t happen to be one.

Vita Liberita Phenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Mousse – Medium

Price:  $54

Vita Liberita was recommended by another blogger that I follow. Unlike the sunless tanners that build up color slowly, the Vita Liberita Phenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Mousse provides immediate color. The 2-3 week in the product description refers to how long the tan is supposed to last. It only lasted a week on me.

Vita Liberita bills itself as a luxury tan brand.  They have many types of tanning products that tan in different amounts of time and come in fair, medium or dark.

I applied this product with a tanning mitt, which I loved.  I found that it made the mousse spread more evenly. And since this is a product that provides immediate color, my hands didn’t get stained when using it.

The consistency is similar to the Rodan and Fields, only a bit thicker.

When I applied Vita Liberita at home, I loved the color and was so pleased that I saw results immediately. I thought that I had applied it correctly, per the instructions. However, later that day when I got out in the sun, I saw all kinds of streaks and dark places. It looked horrible.

Perhaps there was a slight amount of “user error” in applying this product – I don’t know.  But I didn’t have this problem with the other two products I used. And since I paid over $50 for this “luxury product”, I was not happy.

Pros:

  • Immediate color

Cons:

  • Streaking and dark spots
  • Price

How to apply sunless tanners:

There is definitely a technique to applying sunless tanners to ensure that you get even coverage and no dark spots.

  • For the most natural-looking color, be sure to exfoliate before first use.
  • Spread evenly & smoothly. I apply my sunless tanner much more carefully than I do a regular moisturizing lotion, making sure I don’t miss any spots.
  • Use sparingly on dry areas like knuckles, knees, ankles and in between fingers and toes.
  • Go over these areas with a damp washcloth to make sure there is no excess product that would result in dark spots.

Conclusion:

I like the Jergen’s and Rodan and Fields equally. Both provide a natural color that builds up over time, which prevents the dark spots and streaking. I like the moisturizing benefits of the Jergens and the quick drying time of the of the Rodan and Fields

In a perfect world, I would keep them both on hand so that I could use either of them, depending on the time I had. But the $26 price tag on the Rodan and Fields is more than I want to pay.

But if YOU would like to try to Rodan and Fields, I have a deal for you! I’m giving away the Rodan and Fields Essentials Sunless Tan to one lucky reader along with the Rodan and Fields  Essentials Lip Shield with Broad Spectrum SPF 25.

There are 2 ways to enter. Use the Rodan and Fields Solution Tool, which will tell you which regimen of their great skincare is right for you. And/or leave a blog comment below and use the hashtag #sunlesstanner. Do both and you’ll have TWO chances to win!

The drawing will be May 30, 2018 – just in time to kick off summer.

4 Expert Thrift Store Shopping Hacks From An Experienced Thrifter

Do you shop at thrift stores? I must admit, I’ve never had much luck with this. But I have been so intrigued by people who find great items at super cheap prices by shopping at thrift stores. One of them is my blogging friend, Jodie from Jodie’s Touch of Style. Jodie’s blog features her mother (80+ model) stepmom (60+ model) and her (50+ model). Today she is giving us her 4 Expert Thrift Store Shopping Hacks.

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. If you purchase a product through my link, I may receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

I talked about my history with preloved items when thredUp was having their celebration of International Women’s Day, yet I’ve been thrifting far longer than I’ve been blogging.

The first time a friend took me to a thrift store, I was amazed that you could get clothes that were almost new for such a great price. As a sale shopper, I’ve always been price conscious which is a trait that’s been handed down from my mother (the 80+ model on my blog).

So let me give my 4 Expert Thrift Store Shopping Hacks That I’ve Learned Over the Years

This way of shopping is truly a treasure hunt. If you are someone who doesn’t enjoy taking the time to shop or look through a mix of items, then it’s probably not going to float your boat. Yet I will say that taking a friend along can be the best tip ever. Many articles will tell you that a friend may push you into items of styles that you think aren’t you. However, I will say that this can actually help you be more successful in your shopping adventure. I feel that a second set of eyes can open you up to new and even better possibilities that you wouldn’t have considered on your own. Unless I’m the only one that gets into a rut with my clothing choices?

1-Where to shop

Many years ago, you were limited to the second hand and consignment stores in your local area. However, now you can even enjoy them online with companies like thredUp, Poshmark, and eBay. (See Jodie’s tips on shopping at online thrift stores here).

The advantage and yet disadvantage at the same time, is that each store will have different items. If you are shopping in a brick and mortar store, you are most likely going to be getting items that women in the area have donated. Keeping that in mind, it’s fun to explore the second-hand stores when you go traveling to a different place. That can give you an entirely different selection of goods.

I like to say that thrifting can be feast or famine. Your favorite store may have a load of items one time and nothing at another visit. So the best thing to remember is patience. Do not expect to go to the thrift store with only 5 minutes to spare and be successful.

Explore your area for places you never knew about. I have found secondhand stores tucked into a strip mall where I go regularly, yet I never knew they were there.

2-What to look for

I have a couple of tips for finding the things you need at the second-hand stores.

First, have an open mind when you are going shopping. The worst feeling is to be going with a certain item in mind because rarely will that item be there. That’s where the online thrift stores trump the brick and mortar. You can search for a particular item on most online secondhand shops. That’s how I found my leopard coat on Poshmark.

So I find myself having much more success if I go to the store with no expectations and ready to explore everything.

[bctt tweet=”To be successful when shopping in a thrift store go with no expectations and be ready to explore everything. @jtouchofstyle #thrifty” username=”mysideof50″]

That being said, I do think it’s handy to have an ongoing list of items you wished you could find. This isn’t like a grocery list which you will finish each time you go shopping. This will be one that you may or may not find the items for a year or two depending on the season and what is available. I keep this list on my phone in my notes. When I think of something I’d like, I add it to the list. And this also helps me when I’m shopping at retail stores too.

Don’t discount items that aren’t the perfect fit. Because just like at retail stores, most of us should have 50-80% of our purchases altered to make them fit us better. I’ve learned this from my mother who was in professional alterations for years. You may think that it would be silly to spend money to alter an item that cost you so little in the first place. Sometimes, you can even spend more on the alterations than the piece. However, this is the ideal time to spend that money, because in reality, then the price of the full item including alterations is still affordable as long as it’s something you’ll wear a lot.

Before you purchase an item or even consider having it altered, you need to examine the piece really well and make sure to try it on. Many consignment stores are dark or the fitting rooms aren’t well lit. It’s important to inspect the pieces thoroughly because these items aren’t new, and you can’t usually return them. In saying that, some stores have a return policy so it’s good to ask, and I know that thredUp is one of those. For example, I bought a maxi skirt at a Goodwill store and once I got it home, I noticed the bottom hem was dirty and worn. Luckily, I needed to shorten it anyway, so no harm done. But I will caution you to turn the item all around and even inside out to see what kind of shape it’s in before you buy it.

Make a point to look around the entire store. I used to only check out the clothing items when I shopped at thrift stores. However, you can miss out on many fun accessories, or even home decor if you don’t look around.

3-Thought Process as I’m shopping

Now that we had our colors analyzed, I’m trying to be better about only getting new pieces of clothing that look great on me. I limit this to the tops, jackets, sweaters, and scarves that are going to be close to my face.

Get 3 Fashionable Ways to Tie a Scarf here!

One question I always ask when I pick out an item is do I already have this or a version of it? What I have noticed, is when we “like” something at the stores, many times it’s because we already have something like it in our closets. For example, my mother is a white blouse collector, and we’ve ascertained that she does not need another one for another 10 years. (That doesn’t mean she won’t buy one…haha). But it’s a good question to think about when you’re shopping. It’s only normal to like the items that appeal to you. Therefore you may already have one just like it in your closet.

I know many women will ask themselves if they can style it with 3 different outfits before they buy an item. This is one time, that I think it’s fine to break this rule. Due to the fact that you aren’t paying full price, you can “splurge.” Not every item in our closet has to function in many different ways. And it’s a perfect time to try something “unusual” or “not your style.”

4-Best things to buy at thrift stores

Before I started blogging, I didn’t know brands and labels very well, so I always just bought what I liked. And that’s perfectly fine. But if you like a certain brand more than others, then it’s great to search for that brand of clothing. For example, many women love Chicos or WHBM, and I’ve seen these brands often where I shop. There are even times you will find the higher end brands that you may covet, yet don’t feel comfortable spending the money on at retail stores.  A couple of years ago, I came across a pair of Stuart Weitzman sandals at Goodwill for $7. They are a classic color and style, and I wear them to this day.

This is the best time to find classic and non-trendy items. For example, I’m always on the lookout for a great striped shirt and gingham blouse. But don’t forget to check the men’s section too. If you don’t mind buttoning shirts the opposite way, this can offer you more possibilities.

That being said, if you do spot a trendy item at the thrift store, this could be the time to get it. Just in case, the trend doesn’t stick around for long or you don’t wear it much after you bring it home, at least you didn’t spend a lot on it.

Have you ever wondered if the high-end denim is really worth it? Well, this could be the perfect time to try it out, yet not pay the high prices. If you don’t know which denim is high end or not, you can always google the brand while you’re in the store and compare prices.

[bctt tweet=”Want to wear high-end clothing brands, but don’t want to pay high prices? Check out your area thrift stores! #thrifty” username=”mysideof50″]

I think this is the best time to purchase a special event dress or purse if you come across it. Most of our special event dresses or clutches only get worn a couple of times, so it feels like a waste to spend a boatload of money on these purchases. I found a metallic dress at Goodwill once that I wore to such a gala.

I’ve even since learned to style it casually so I can get more uses out of it. However, even if I hadn’t done this, I wouldn’t feel so bad since I paid under $10 for it.

Conclusion

A couple of questions people have asked me is whether everything is washed when you buy it at these stores. Most places ask you to donate clean items; however, I make sure to wash most everything when I get home. If an item is dry clean only, then I may Febreeze it or put it in the dryer with Dryel.

Remember, that second-hand shopping can be a fun experience. Especially when you can find such great treasures at wonderful prices when you are thrifting. Not only are you saving money, but you are also helping out the environment by reusing items instead of having them go to the landfills.

Teeth Whitening for People With Sensitive Teeth

Have you ever wanted to whiten your teeth, but avoided it because of the sensitivity you get when you use teeth whitening products? I did for a long time. But then I saw another blogger post (who happens to be a former cosmetic dentist) on Smile Brilliant– an at home teeth whitening system that even people with sensitive teeth could use without discomfort. Is it possible? Teeth Whitening for People with Sensitive Teeth?  Yes, it is!

This post was sponsored by Smile Brilliant. All opinions are my own. This post also contains some affiliate links for your convenience. If you purchase a product through my link, I may receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

When I hit 50, I started noticing that my teeth were getting really yellowed and discolored. I drink coffee all day every day, so it’s no wonder that this has happened.

I’ve tried a number of ways to get rid of those stains. Whitening toothpaste (didn’t do a thing). Charcoal (left a black mess in the sink with no results). Those whitening strips you get at the drug store. While I did get some temporary whitening from them, I found them to be messy, hard to use and that they made my teeth and gums feel really sensitive, so I always had to stop using them.

And as much as I wanted whiter teeth, I wasn’t willing to take the time and pay the money required to get them done at the dentist’s office. Plus, I was really afraid of the sensitivity that could occur when using a professional strength whitening gel.

But the Smile Brilliant System is different.  Smile Brilliant’s system uses custom-fitted whitening trays, which are the #1 dentist recommended teeth whitening method. Using these custom fitted trays ensures that every angle of every tooth  (regardless of whether your teeth are straight or not) receives even and consistent coverage of their professional strength whitening gel.

So how does it work? How do you get those professional results at home?  When you order your Smile Brilliant at-home whitening kit, you get everything you need!

  • Plastic trays and material to make your dental impressions that you send back to their lab in a postage-paid envelope. The instructions were easy to follow, and although my gag reflex kicked in a little bit when making the impressions, it was not a big deal.
  • Once the Smile Brilliant Lab receives your dental impressions, you get your custom-fitted trays back in 3-5 business days – that is fast!
  • Then every night for 2-weeks you whiten! I started seeing results in about 5 days.

The whitening process:

Every night before I went to bed, I filled my trays with the teeth whitening gel and put them in for 45 minutes while I watched TV. You can keep them in longer, but I was going for the minimum amount of time.

After you whiten, you brush your teeth and fill those same trays with the de-sensitizing gel and put those in for 20 minutes.

Then you are done! Easy Peasy!

I will say that at about Day 8, I did start feeling some slight sensitivity.  But I just took a night off of whitening and started up again the next day with no problem.

So here are my results that took 16 days (2 nights off for a little sensitivity):

I love my results. In the before picture, you will see some dark stains on my top front teeth. They are almost all the way gone. I love how my smile is so much whiter and brighter these days.

I found the whole process super easy to do. The instructions that came with the kit are very thorough, so I had complete confidence in making my own molds and following the whitening process.

I love the custom-fitted trays. They stayed in place (didn’t slip around like those strips do) and were comfortable to wear.

And it takes a lot less time to whiten at home and a lot less money than going to the dentist.

Back Fat Be Gone! | Comfortable Shapewear to Smooth Out Back Fat and Make Your Panty Lines Disappear!

Do you ever look at yourself from behind and wonder where all those rolls around your bra straps came from? Even if you’re not overweight, the wrong bra can make it looks like you have all kinds of that dreaded back fat! And of course, no one wants a panty line to ruin the look of a great pair of pants.

This post was sponsored by Soma Intimates. All opinions are my own.

That’s why I’m so excited to partner with Soma Intimates to tell you about their Vanishing Back Bra and Vanishing Edge Panty.

I’ve been wearing Soma’s Vanishing Edge Panties since they first came out a number of years ago and they do just what they say – VANISH when you put on a pair of pants over them.

This is the Vanishing Tummy With Lace Retro Brief:

I’m pretty much a nude, black or ivory girl when it comes to the color of my lingerie, but I opted for this fun lace brief in Imperial Purple. Don’t you love it?

This style of Vanishing Edge Panty offers what you have come to expect from Soma – thin silicone strips around the leg opening to keep the panty in place and the no-roll waistband. But the Vanishing Tummy feature gives you something extra.  A double-layered microfiber front panel that smooths you out and gives you that little bit of tummy control.

This is the Back Close With Lace Trim Vanishing Back Bra:

This is my first bra from Soma and I was so impressed by its fit and comfort!

When the brand first contacted me about a partnership, they asked me to use their Bra Fit Guide to determine my size. This guide includes a video on how to measure yourself to get the best fit.  I did as instructed and was so surprised at the size it said I was! I had recently had a professional bra fitting and the sizes were totally different.

My contact with Soma was so nice. She sent me the “Soma Size” bra and the size that I THOUGHT I was. Sure enough, the Soma Size fit perfectly. So….if you are ordering online, use the Bra Fit Guide!

Now for the best part. I wanted to show you before and after pictures of me wearing the Vanishing Back Bra.

Here are the pictures – side by side! I am amazed at the difference.  Those back rolls really DO disappear.

And the Vanishing Back Bra is one of the softest, most comfortable and supportive bras I have ever worn. They make your “girls” look good!

Take a look at all the great colors and styles of Vanishing Back Bras and Vanishing Edge Panties that Soma Intimates offers.

Can You Wear Black to a Wedding? | A Review of Talbots Refined Ponte Sheath

Can You Wear Black to a Wedding? It used to be a “rule” that this was highly inappropriate – right up there with wearing white (except if you were the bride). But so many of the “fashion rules” that we used to follow don’t seem to apply anymore.

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. If you purchase a product through my link, I may receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

Here are my rules of what to wear ANYWHERE! It has to fit, be comfortable, not require shapewear and I have to LOVE it! Those first three requirements can be tough to meet when looking for something dressy! But Talbot’s Refined Ponte Sheath was just the thing. It fit. It was flattering. I didn’t have to wear shapewear and I absolutely loved it.

These pictures were taken with an iPhone using various filters to try to improve them. That didn’t work.

But I really wanted to show you this dress!

What do I love about the Refined Ponte Sheath from Talbots’ RSVP Collection? It’s simple design which allowed me to highlight my Harlow Statement Necklace from Kendra Scott (on sale). The cut of the dress skims which over your curves.  And the Ponte knit fabric that has just enough weight to it so that it doesn’t cling to every lump and bump! Update: October 15, 2018. The Refined Ponte Sheath is not longer available, but you can see some of my other favorites below.

The wedding was a 5 p.m. outdoor wedding at the Giddings-Stone Mansion in Brenham, Texas, just west of Houston. The weather was perfect. The sun was shining, it was a little bit overcast and in the 70’s.

The 3/4 length sleeves have such a fun scalloped detail, which also provided a little ventilation while the sun was out. But also enough cover when the sun went down and it got a little cool.

Don’t you love those sleeves?

These are my “Rosie” shoes from Walking Cradles. I love the straps and the pointed toe that elongates the leg. Think you can’t wear a pointed toe shoe? The Rosie has a wide toe box (wide enough for my 8WW feet) that gradually goes to a point. For once, I wore a pair of dress shoes that I was not kicking off under the table halfway through the evening! And I felt kinda sexy….

This outfit scored me dances with two of the most handsome men at the wedding!

My husband, Tony….

And grandson, Parker.

Congratulations, Lucas & Kelsy!

Other dresses I like from the RSVP Collection:

Jacquard Sheath Dress (on sale)

Flowing Fit & Flair (on sale)

Bow-Sleeve Refined Ponte Sheath Dress – Black/Ivory

Refined Ponte Sheath Short Sleeve

Refined Ponte & Velvet Dress

See how my friends over at Jodie’s Touch of Style styled their little black dresses for Spring!

Over 50 Skincare | Products I Use

Over 50 Skincare. It’s a lot different than when you are in your 20’s – am I right? And boy do the skincare and cosmetic companies market to us with all this anti-aging stuff.   Y’all – there’s no such thing as anti-aging. We are all aging.

Updated December 5, 2018

Since I was a teenager, I have always taken off my makeup and washed my face morning and night. When I got into my 20’s, I added moisturizer to the routine. What I was terrible about what using sunscreen. In college, I started baking in the sun daily starting in about March (you can do that in Texas) to get that super-tanned look in time for my sorority’s spring formal. And even when I knew better, I didn’t use sunscreen consistently. So I have a lot of sun damage.

And while there is no line of skincare that is going to turn back the clock and make me look 25 again, I do want to take care of the skin I have now. I want it to feel good. I want my makeup to go on smoothly. And I want to minimize any damage that I do have and keep from getting any more.

Over 50 Skincare | Rodan and Fields

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. If you make a purchase through one of my links, I will make a commission at no extra cost to you.

So I started using Rodan and Fields Reverse Lightening Regimen.   I had no illusions that Rodan and Fields was going to be much different than any other line I had used. But my friend Ginger was selling it and GAVE ME A FREE Reverse Regimen if I would take before and after pictures of my results for her. She did not give me the regimen for FREE so that I would review it on my blog. She just wanted the pictures for her own promotion.

Here are my before and after pictures. I will qualify this by saying that even though my daughter Amy took them, following my direction, I don’t think the pictures give the full story. The lighting is different. One’s smiling and one’s not. I don’t know why – it just worked out that way. But I do see a BIG difference in the visibility of my age spots/sunspots. They have faded dramatically. The one on the right (as you are looking at the picture) has all but disappeared. The one on the left under my eye is almost gone and the big one on the left is a lot lighter. Rodan and Fields Reverse Lightening Regimen has made a huge difference in the appearance and feel of my skin!

Rodan and Fields has 4 Skincare Regimens:

Redefine – For the appearance of lines, pores, and loss of firmness. (I’m trying this one now)

Reverse – For the full range of skin discoloration concerns – dullness, stubborn dark marks, age spots

Unblemish – For acne

Soothe – For sensitive skin

If you want to improve the look and feel of your skin at any age, I highly recommend Rodan + Fields. Since I started using it, I found out that a lot of my friends do too and everyone LOVES it! You can find out what regimen is right for you by using Rodan and Fields Solutions Tool.

I also used Rodan and Fields Active Hydration Serum along with REVERSE. This is not a moisturizer. It’s a serum that goes on your skin before your moisturizer and it feels like silk. I’ve never felt anything like it. It’s non-oily and raises the hydration of your skin 200% after one use. I feel like I am truly nourishing my skin when I use this serum. Even with the dry, cold air we experience in winter, I don’t feel the need to continually re-apply my moisturizer all day when I use the active hydration system.

Here’s the great thing about Rodan and Fields – you can try their products at no risk. They have a 60-Day empty bottle guarantee. If you aren’t completely satisfied with their product, return it – even if the bottles are empty – for a full refund.

Over 50 Skincare | Other Products I Use

Links to these two products are affiliate links. If you purchase a product through my link, I may receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

doTerra Spa Moisturizing Bath Bar – I’ve used doTerra Essential Oils for years, but had never used any of their other products. My sister gave me a bar of this soap for Christmas. I will never go back to regular soap or body wash again. This soap is different from anything I have ever used. It’s infused with essential oils and has a light scent that is not overpowering. It leaves my skin feeling so clean, smooth & soft in a natural way – not in an artificial way like so many other moisturizing bars do.

How has your skincare routine changed since your younger days? Tell me in the comments –I’d love to know.
