Quintessential Style: Cultivate and Communicate Your Signature Look by Janna Beatty with Sharon White
I have written several blog posts about how it has been hard for me to find my “personal style” or any sense of style that I feel good about in midlife. Midlife weight gain, the difficulty in finding clothes that are both comfortable and stylish, knowing what is on-trend or how to mix, match & accessorize are all factors that contribute to me feeling less than confident when it comes to getting dressed every day.
Quintessential Style: Cultivate and Communicate Your Signature Look has come to the rescue. Rather than just being a book with a few general beauty and fashion tips, it is an actual workbook that helps you figure out all the elements needed to help you look your best:
- Worksheets to help you determine what you want to communicate through your look.
[bctt tweet=”Intentional Dressing. Deciding how you want to be perceived and dressing accordingly.” username=”MySideof50″]
- Your best colors, taking into account your skin color, hair color and contrast between the two.
[bctt tweet=”Color is the first thing perceived and the last thing remembered – Janna Beatty” username=”MySideof50″]
- Body shape and proportion.
- How different cuts of clothing and types of fabrics can flatter your figure.
- How to put together a basic wardrobe with a few classic pieces and use accessories to create many different looks.
- Tips for skin care and makeup that enhance your natural beauty in midlife.
[bctt tweet=”As we age, loss of moisture and loss of color are what cause us to look older.” username=”MySideof50″]
In Quintessential Style, author Janna Beatty brings over 30 years of experience in the beauty consulting business. She has studied in New York and Paris with some of the most respected advisors in the beauty and fashion industry.
“After all that (study), it is the 30 years of working with my amazing clients that has taught me the most important thing — each person is unique, with his/her own beautiful possibilities.” – Janna Beatty

Sounds like a great book Cathy which I will definitely follow up. Colour is one thing I have brought to my wardrobe since leaving the Corporate black/grey world behind. It always peps me up.
This is really cool. Were you on track, or have you switched things up? I have standard pieces that I wear with different shoes and accessories, there are times I wish I could dress a bit different, but mostly I just need to tighten it up a bit! This book sounds like just what I need! Thanks.
I’m certainly going to re-assess my wardrobe before I buy a lot for Fall!
It sounds amazing! Still, it’s probably a bridge too far for me at this stage of my life. I have a good sense of what looks good and doesn’t. Although I must admit i’m kind of curious!
She talked about some things that I never considered. A good read.
These are all important things to think about as we get older. We have to be willing to keep up to date with our changing looks.
So true, Mary…
Cathy, this sounds like just what I need!
Jean – it sure had some great tips for me!
Color does say so much about who you are and how you feel about yourself. It sure is the first thing people see about you. It helps make impressions
Cathy, I have this book and love it. I need to do a review on it also. I also like that it’s a workbook. Thank you for the review!
Sherry – you should. Several have bought it through my link and one of my friends keeps e-mailing me on the progress she is making in her closet! LOL!
I used to wear almost exclusively black but as I’ve gotten older and lost color in my face, I have added more colors especially near my face. It does help to reinvigorate my complexion much more than black.
Same here, Rosie. This book had several things to consider as we age. I am glad I read it.
Cathy,
Thanks so much for visiting!! Hope you are having a great weekend!
Hugs,
Debbie
This book would be a fabulous gift for a friend, sister or mother. I am glad to hear you have found is so helpful. Staying stylish while getting older can be a challenge. I also used Stitch Fix for a while, and liked that they suggested new styles/patterns that I would never have picked out myself. Sadly, they don’t have Stitch Fix in Canada. Thanks Cathy for hosting Over The Moon link up party – glad I can participate!
I had Stitch Fix for a while too. Had the same experience – they sent me stuff I would never have looked at twice in the store. Encouraged me to broaden my fashion horizons!
Sounds like a good read! I love books about fashion or style. I think it’s getting so much easier with age to dress well. You know your body and what works for you/#overthemoon
That is very true! It was a good read!
Sounds like a great book! It’s so important to evaluate/re-evaluate our style every couple years I think.
Andrea – so true. Great book chock full of helpful information!
Sounds a good book Cathy I find I’m wearing a lot more colour these days (I went through a phase of wearing mainly black). Off to read about how you got your midlife style back!
Valerie – I have SO MUCH BLACK! My goal is to add color this season!
have you ever checked out Dressing Your Truth. I think you would really like it.
Kellie – I have not – will look into that!
